Photo Set: "'A Gathering of Lilies' Remix"

I experiment quite often. Almost everything that has come from Activo! has been the result of some kind of experimentation—even experiments of experimentations! Such was the case with "'A Gathering of Lilies' Remix", a project borne from the bones of another project (that was spurned on by another project…).

Not long after completing work on "Fireworks | 'Flower'" [society6] [Redbubble], I began cultivating and examining other firework photographs on hand. With a particular one, I saw something in it that led me to take a corner of it and mirror it in a certain fashion. To create a "new" image of firework? A "pinwheel"? Just to see what would happen? Nothing concrete and maybe a little bit of all, but the result was quite striking…

However, as I learned from "Flower", that was only the beginning of the process, as a decent amount of slight, but careful, clean-up work was required. I had other works to tend to, however, and since it was primarily a side experiment, I put it aside. I never forgot about it, however, and after posting the "Gathering of Lilies" series, I noticed the layout of the flowers in one of the photographs was reminiscent of the way that picture corner looked…

"I wonder…what would happen if I did this…"

So often goes the case in experimentation. I applied the same mirroring principle to it, and with a simple dance of flips and turns, one curious move to the next, what resulted was an uncanny, kaleidoscopic take that I had not anticipated. In the end, four images were yielded from each of  the original five, making twenty in total. Given the process, you can detect broad patterns and traits, and the four "remixes" combined also form one continuous pattern, and yet, each remains quite unique. A few interesting anomalies can be observed, as well, ranging from "circles" and "bridges", to "hearts" and "faces" for a few others.

Even in the realm of expected unexpectedness in experimentation, it can be difficult to grasp even that concept in the end. The excursion opened my eyes on a number of levels and is now something I keep in mind when working with other photos…

Moral of this (back)story? When you see something you think could be possible, it always pays to try and give it a chance. It may lead to something even greater than you imagined.

(P.S.: As for that "pinwheel" firework…still haven't finished it, yet…)
